Royal Caribbean’s next mega ship is one step closer to its debut. Star of the Seas has officially sailed in open waters for the first time.
The cruise line’s second vessel in its Icon Class began a series of sea trials this week from the Meyer Turku shipyard in Finland. The passing of sea trials is one of the key milestones before Star of the Seas debuts from Port Canaveral, Florida in August 2025.
Meyer Turku posted on its social media, “Star of the Seas departed our shipyard early Monday morning to begin her sea trials. We wish her and her crew sunny skies and smooth sailing!”
Throughout the next several days, more than 2,000 architecture, engineering, navigation and design experts will put the vessel to the test while at sea. They will test how the ship moves and how the engine performs. The ship will sail hundreds of miles before entering her last phase of construction back at the shipyard.
Once Star of the Seas returns to the shipyard in Finland, she will receive her final touches to the interior, a deep cleaning and the necessary supplies to begin receiving passengers. The final phase of Star of the Seas will be the formal delivery ceremony where Meyer Turk officially hands the ship over to Royal Caribbean.
Like her sister, Star of the Seas will feature eight neighborhoods, the fastest and tallest waterslides, seven pools, numerous dining venues, bars and lounges as well as world-class entertainment. Sailing from Port Canaveral, guests will enjoy 7-night Eastern or Western Caribbean voyages which include Perfect Day at CocoCay.
In 2026, Royal Caribbean will welcome its third Icon class ship, Legend of the Seas, which is currently under construction at the Meyer Turku shipyard in Finland. Legend of the Seas will spend her maiden season in the Western Mediterranean sailing to Spain, France and Italy. Additionally, one more Icon class ship is on order with Meyer Turku and scheduled to debut in 2027.
