Cruise News Digest — August 13, 2023

Welcome to the weekly Cruise News Digest. Here you can catch up on the past week’s cruise news and all things La Lido Loca

Let’s dive in!

Celebrity Cruises announced this week that sisters, Captain Sandy Yawn and Michelle Dunham, will serve as godmothers for Celebrity Ascent when the Edge Class ship sails in November. Captain Sandy Yawn is known for her appearance on Bravo TV’s reality show “Below Deck” while Michelle Dunham is the co-founder of the Jacksonville School for Autism.

Two ships-two different rescues. Just after beginning her 8-day roundtrip Caribbean voyage, Carnival Cruise Line’s Mardi Gras aided the Coast Guard in the rescue of a private boat with two individuals onboard. Just days before, Cunard’s Queen Mary 2 received a rescue after strong winds forced her away from the pier, snapping her bow line and collapsing her forward and aft gangways.

Captain Vittorio Marchi celebrated his 35th anniversary with Carnival Cruise Line on August 8. He began his journey with Carnival Cruise Line on 8/8/88 and worked his way up through the ranks to the role of Captain. Eight has certainly been his lucky number.

Royal Caribbean has canceled a series of bucket list itineraries for guests booked on Rhapsody of the Seas. The canceled itinerary was a series of 7-night cruises that began and concluded in Panama and included a Panama Canal transit. The idea of a shorter cruise offering a full transit instead of a partial transit is unique and very popular. However, with no specific reason given, those itineraries are canceled and Rhapsody of the Seas is offering Southern Caribbean cruises.

The week ended with a couple of firsts. Norwegian Cruise Line welcomed her first guests aboard the newest Prima Class ship, Norwegian Viva, when she embarked on her maiden voyage from Venice, Italy on Thursday, August 10, 2023.

And…

Crystal Symphony, has successfully completed her first sea trials just two weeks after the debut of her sister, Crystal Serenity, from Marseille. Crystal Symphony is currently under renovations at Fincantieri shipyard in Italy. The sea trials tested the ship’s navigation, technical, and mechanical systems and everything passed inspection.
