Oceania Cruises Begins Construction of New Class of Ship

On June 4, 2025, Oceania Cruises revealed its next class of ship with the celebratory steel cutting of Oceania Sonata. The celebration, which introduced the cruise line’s new Sonata Class, was held at the Fincantieri-Marghera shipyard in Venice, Italy.

When the flagship of the Sonata class debuts in 2027, the 1,460-passenger Oceania Sonata will be the cruise line’s largest ship to date. The cruise line also announced Oceania Sonata will be followed by her sister ship, Oceania Arietta, in 2029.

Oceania Sonata heralds the dawn of a new era in luxury cruising,” said Jason Montague, Chief Luxury officer of Oceania Cruises. “We are proud to continue our legacy of innovation alongside Fincantieri, our shipbuilding partner for close to 20 years. Together, we have crafted ships that stand as some of the most acclaimed examples of luxury, elegance, comfort, and Italian craftsmanship at sea.”

Oceania Sonata will mark the ninth ship in the Oceania Cruises fleet. She will embark on her maiden voyage in summer 2027. While no details of her itinerary, design or onboard features have been revealed, the cruise line promises the Sonata class of ships will be the most spacious with the most amenities for its guests.

Fincantieri and Oceania Cruises have a long partnership. The Italian shipbuilder constructed three existing Oceania Cruises’ ships–Oceania Marina, Oceania Riviera, Oceania Vista–and is in the final stages of construction of Oceania Allura which will debut in July 2025.

Oceania Sonata is part of an eight-vessel order for its parent company, Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings. In addition to the ships for Oceania Cruises, four mega-ships are on order for Norwegian Cruise Line and two ships are on order for Regent Seven Seas Cruises. Norwegian Cruise Line’s ships are still to be named but are expected in 2030, 2032, 2034 and 2036. Regent Seven Seas Cruises will debut Seven Seas Prestige in 2026, and an unnamed ship in 2029.
