Cunard Celebrates Two Milestones

Cunard announced on Tuesday, August 15, 2023, that its entire fleet now has the capability to connect to shore power.

Queen Elizabeth was the last ship in the fleet to be fitted with shore power capabilities and now all three ships can connect to shore power when available. When Queen Anne debuts in May 2024, she also will have the technology installed.

Shore power technology is a valuable resource because it enables ships to connect to a land-based source when docked which allows them to turn off their engines and reduce emissions and noise while in port. While the technology is not available at every port, it is available at key ports including Queen Mary’s and Queen Anne’s homeports in Brooklyn and Southampton respectively.

Katie McAlister, President at Cunard, said, “By adopting shore power technology, we are taking a significant step in our ongoing commitment to reducing emissions, minimizing our carbon footprint, and fostering healthier port environments. The introduction of shore power technology aligns seamlessly with Cunard’s corporate vision and values, and we are proud to be able to take such a positive step.”

On Wednesday, August 16, 2023, Cunard’s Queen Elizabeth was welcomed by The Greater Victoria Harbour Authority (GVHA) when they arrived in Victoria, British Columbia bringing the ten millionth cruise passenger to The Breakwater District at Ogden Point. Cunard’s Queen Elizabeth’s arrival marked 54 years of cruise ships visiting Victoria.

Robert Lewis-Manning, CEO of GVHA, said, “Ten million cruise visitors to Victoria is an incredible milestone. Cruise supports the region’s visitor economy and creates jobs that support Victoria’s economic recovery. Engineers, entrepreneurs, accountants, mechanics and others are employed due to cruise tourism in Victoria, with salaries totalling over $40 million annually.”

Each year, approximately $56 million dollars is spent on tours, local transportation, shopping, and dining by cruisers and crew members while in port. Cruise lines themselves contribute nearly $84 million on things like warehousing, repairs, maintenance, port fees and more.

Victoria’s Mayor Marianne Alto was also on hand for the celebration. “Victoria welcomes and celebrates its ten millionth cruise ship passenger,” said Alto. “The cruise industry is a valued and vital part of a regional visitor industry that continues to create countless career opportunities and support the livelihood of Victorians.”

Joining the celebration and welcoming guests along with the mayor were industry partners and other stakeholders.

Matt Gleaves, Vice President of Cunard North America stated, “Victoria is a world-class city because it has something for everyone, from natural beauty, heritage and architecture to fabulous dining options and a warm community. It is a much-loved highlight of Cunard’s voyages in this part of the world and holds great appeal for Cunard’s guests as well as from our sister brands across our corporation.”

It has been since 1969 to achieve the milestone of 10 million cruise passengers. With the way the industry has grown in the last 54 years, how long will it be before Victoria is celebrating 20 million?
