Nassau Cruise Port Joins the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower Program

Nassau Cruise Port (NCP) is the first regional port to join the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower Program, a global initiative supporting those with non-visible disabilities such as autism spectrum disorder (ASD), ADHD, epilepsy, mental health conditions, and more.

The Hidden Disabilities Sunflower Program offers a simple, discreet and effective way for individuals with non-visible disabilities to express their need for additional support or understanding. Participants of the program “wear a green lanyard, badge or wristband with a yellow sunflower indicating to staff and others they may need extra assistance, patience or time.”

CEO of Nassau Cruise Port, Mike Maura, Jr., stated, “We are thrilled to join the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower Program. This initiative is a testament to our ongoing efforts to enhance the passenger experience and ensure that everyone who visits Nassau Cruise Port feels supported and valued. Globally, 1.3 billion people have a disability, representing 1 in 6 of the population who can face barriers when travelling. We are committed to fostering an inclusive environment and look forward to the positive impact this program will have on our visitors and the local community.”

Benefits of the program include an enhanced customer experience, increased inclusivity, and improved staff training. First, the lanyards, badges or wristbands will allow staff to more effectively notice and assist passengers with non-visible disabilities and support them as needed. Next, participation in the program further emphasizes the port’s commitment to creating an environment where everyone feels welcomed and valued. Last, NCP staff will receive comprehensive training giving them the knowledge and skills needed to better assist passengers with non-visible disabilities.

Paul White, CEO Hidden Disabilities Sunflower, said, “Nassau Cruise Port is the first cruise port in the region to become a member of the global Hidden Disabilities Sunflower network. It signals their commitment to improve accessibility in the travel industry and be leaders in the sector. Ports are busy and bustling environments that can be overwhelming and challenging to navigate. The teams will offer Sunflower wearers help, time and understanding to deliver passengers a safe and inclusive experience.”

As one of the busiest cruise ports in the world, Nassau Cruise Port is setting a standard for excellence in cruising with this latest initiative.
