Cruise Ship Hairstylist Arrested After Alleged “Fake Massage”

The biggest story today comes from Virgin Voyages’ Brilliant Lady, where a 26-year-old hairstylist has been arrested following allegations made by two passengers.

According to investigators, the women say they booked hair appointments and were then offered a complimentary massage if they scheduled additional spa services. Instead of receiving a legitimate spa treatment, they allege the employee took them into a room and inappropriately touched them during what authorities describe as a fake massage.

The FBI is handling the investigation because crimes aboard cruise ships often fall under federal maritime jurisdiction.

If convicted, the accused could face prison time for each count.

Stories like this are upsetting, but they also serve as an important reminder. Cruising remains an overwhelmingly safe way to travel, with millions of passengers sailing every year. Unfortunately, just as in any large industry, bad actors occasionally appear. Being aware of your surroundings and reporting suspicious behavior remains one of the best ways to help keep cruising safe for everyone.

The FBI is asking anyone who may have had concerning interactions with the employee aboard Brilliant Lady to come forward.

Carnival Firenze Overboard Investigation Update

Authorities have also released additional information regarding the investigation into the death of Brianna Miller, who went overboard from Carnival Firenze earlier this year.

Investigators have determined that she initiated the fall from her balcony before striking a lower deck, with blunt force trauma listed as the cause of death.

While the FBI investigation remains open, Carnival has continued to express its condolences and support for the family.

Although incidents like this receive widespread media attention, they remain extremely rare compared to the millions of people who cruise every year.

Carnival Guest Says $1,000 Photo Session Ended Abruptly

A Carnival cruiser recently shared an unusual experience after booking one of the cruise line’s professional Dream Studio photography sessions.

According to the passenger, she and her husband reviewed their photos before learning the package would cost around $1,000. As they discussed whether the purchase made sense, she says the photographer abruptly deleted every image before they had even finished talking.

The passenger explained that she wasn’t necessarily upset about not buying the photos—it was the way the interaction unfolded that left a bad impression.

Professional photography sessions can produce beautiful keepsakes, but customer service is every bit as important as the photos themselves.

Have you ever purchased one of these professional cruise photo packages? Was it worth the price?

Travel Insurance Doesn’t Always Work the Way You Expect

Travel insurance is one of those topics I talk about often, and today’s story is another reminder to read the fine print.

A cruise passenger left her phone and glasses under a towel while swimming after asking nearby guests to keep an eye on them. When she returned, everything was gone.

Even though she carried travel insurance, her initial claim was denied because the insurance company argued the belongings had been left unattended in a public place.

After outside advocates challenged that interpretation—arguing a cruise ship isn’t the same as a traditional public space—the insurance company eventually agreed to settle the claim for $2,600.

The takeaway isn’t that travel insurance doesn’t work. It’s that every policy has exclusions, and claims don’t always happen automatically.

Personally, Jenny and I carry annual travel insurance primarily for the medical evacuation coverage. It’s one of those things I hope I never need, but I’m glad to have if the unexpected happens.

Carnival Cruise Denied Over a…Poop Sponge?

And finally, we have one of the strangest cruise stories in recent memory.

A woman posted a video claiming her family decided not to board a Carnival cruise after security confiscated what she called a “poop sponge.”

According to her, the family uses a sponge-on-a-stick hygiene method rather than toilet paper for environmental reasons. She says Carnival would not allow the item onboard.

Rather than simply boarding the ship without it, she claims the family turned around and went home.

Whether the story is completely genuine or not, it’s certainly one of the more unusual cruise boarding stories I’ve come across.

Sometimes cruise news is serious.

Sometimes it’s heartbreaking.

And sometimes…it’s about poop sponges.
