Cruise Ship Monday
Today brings us Norwegian Cruise Line’s Sun-class–Norwegian Sun (2001) and Norwegian Sky (1999).
The Sun-class ships are among the smallest ships in the fleet. Norwegian Sun weighs in at 78,309 gross tons, and Norwegian Sky weighs in at 77,104 gross tons. Both ships have 12 decks and carry around 2,000 passengers.
The sister ships offer complimentary eateries which include two Main Dining Rooms, as well as an indoor and outdoor buffet. Norwegian Sun offers a poolside grill, and Norwegian Sky offers a pub serving classic comfort foods. Each ship’s specialty restaurants include an American-style steakhouse, a French restaurant, an Italian restaurant, and a sushi bar. Norwegian Sun also includes a Japanese hibachi restaurant, a Mexican restaurant, and a Brazilian steakhouse. The ship also has various bars and lounges including a coffee bar, a sports bar, and an Atrium Cafe & Bar.
Both ships offer top deck pools, multiple hot tubs, and a kid’s pool. The ships also offer an arcade, a casino, a spa and fitness center and a basketball/volleyball court. There are clubs for kids of all ages, an internet cafe and a walking track.
Entertainment aboard Norwegian Sun includes game shows like Deal or No Deal, Wheel of Fortune, and Famous Riffz, a high-energy musical trivia game. Shows in the Stardust Theater include Motor City Moves, which celebrates the soul of Motown; The Broadway Cabaret, a blend of contemporary and classic Broadway hits; and The Wild Cards, a high-energy cabaret-style dance concert. Norwegian Sky offers the same games shows, Motown show, and Broadway Cabaret, but also features Showdown, an American Idol style show; and Women of Rock, a tribute to music’s boldest women.
Norwegian Cruise Line announced earlier this year that both Sun-class ships will be retired by 2027–Norwegian Sky in 2026 and Norwegian Sun in 2027. But, until then, Norwegian Sky is currently sailing a 12-day one way voyage from Lisbon to Barcelona, and Norwegian Sun is sailing an 11-day one way voyage from Tokyo to Keelung.
