Cruise Ship Monday–NCL Breakaway-Class

It’s Monday!

Cruise Ship Monday

Today brings us Norwegian Cruise Line’s Breakaway-class– Norwegian Breakaway (2013) and Norwegian Getaway (2014).

The Breakaway-class ships were among the first in the industry to feature amenities like a full scale ropes course, a large water park, cabins for solo travelers and a restaurant and lounge exclusively for suite guests. They also introduced cruisers to The Waterfront–a boardwalk-style promenade and a three-story atrium with bars, restaurants and entertainment. Upon their debut, the 3,963-passenger ships became the line’s most popular ships in the fleet.

NCL’s Breakaway-class is action packed. The top deck features two pool areas,  a full-size ropes course with an 8-foot plank, and a large waterpark with multiple slides. There is also a miniature golf course, basketball/volleyball courts, and the usual cruise activities and games. Additionally, adults will enjoy the adults-only pool area called Spice H2O at the back of the ship.

Dining on the two Breakaway ships is very similar. There are a variety of free and for-a-fee venues. They have more than 10 dining options, including the three main dining rooms, the complimentary O’Sheehan’s and America Diner and a free specialty restaurant, Shanghai’s Noodle Bar. The ship’s popular specialty restaurants include Ocean Blue, Moderno Churrascaria, Cagney’s Steakhouse and Teppanyaki.  Norwegian Cruise Line offers freestyle dining which means you eat when you want, where you want, but you will want to reserve your specialty dining.

Onboard entertainment includes trivia, dance classes, movie screening, games shows, etc. A lot of this activity can be found in the ship’s two-deck Atrium. Other places around the ship, guests will find wine tastings, exercise classes, bingo, art auctions, and meet and greets for solo travelers. However, the ships have different entertainment options in their theaters. Norwegian Breakaway offers Red, White & British, Bring Back the 90s, ICONS: The Bands, and Ignite the Night while Norwegian Getaway offers Bring Back the 90s, Burn the Floor, Broadway Cabaret: Rock Edition, and Million Dollar Quartet. Both ships also offer regular performances at Headliners comedy club.

Norwegian Breakaway is currently homeporting from New York and sailing round trip itineraries to the Caribbean, the Bahamas, and Bermuda. Norwegian Getaway is currently homeporting from Miami, Florida and offering a series of round trip itineraries to the Bahamas, the Caribbean and the Dominican Republic.
