Sunday, January 25, 2026, was National Moose Day. To celebrate, Holland America Line announced a new exclusive Alaska shore excursion–a behind-the-scenes visit to the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center (AWCC). The excursion will allow guests to see moose and other Alaska native wildlife in their natural habitat.
“Seeing wildlife is one of the top reasons guests choose to cruise Alaska,” said Kacy Cole, chief marketing officer for Holland America Line. “This new shore excursion gives our guests an extraordinary opportunity to connect with moose in a way that is both unforgettable and responsible, working alongside conservation experts to support the animals and the environment they call home.”
The Exclusive Eland & Friends Moose Discovery Tour was developed in collaboration with AWCC and will debut during the 2026 Alaska cruise season. During the tour, which is led by an AWCC naturalist, guests will experience close-up views of moose habitats, learn about their daily care routines, and gain a deeper understanding of AWCC’s wildlife conservation, research, and education work throughout Alaska. The tour also includes a scenic drive along Alaska’s Seward Highway.
“Partnerships like this allow us to deepen both care and connection,” said Sarah “Howie” Howard, executive director of the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center. “This shore excursion invites guests to experience moose up close in a thoughtful way, while learning firsthand how exceptional animal care and conservation education support long‑term wildlife protection.”
Guests will be excited to know they may encounter Eland during the excursion. Eland arrived at the conservation center in June 2025 and was named by Holland America Line’s social media followers. His name is the Dutch word for “moose” and is a nod to the cruise line’s heritage. Eland has become the AWCC’s ambassador for moose conservation and is a favorite of many guests to the conservation center.
Additionally, Holland America Line donated $150,00 to AWCC in an effort to support ongoing animal care initiatives and the development of a scenic elevated boardwalk that will overlook the moose habitat. Construction of the Holland America Moose Promenade is expected to begin this fall, with completion in time for the 2027 Alaska cruise season.
