Royal Caribbean International to Acquire Port of Costa Maya

Last month, October 2024, Royal Caribbean International announced plans to build Perfect Day Mexico at the current Costa Maya port. This month, according to a recent SEC filing, Royal Caribbean Group has entered into an agreement to acquire the Port of Costa Maya as well as additional land in Mahahual, Quintana Roo. The $292 million acquisition is expected to officially close next year. The closing is subject to regulatory approval and conditions.

Royal Caribbean will not build a new docking system, but will use Costa Maya’s existing infrastructure. The port of Costa Maya will be included in Royal Caribbean International’s Western Caribbean itineraries beginning 2027. Additionally, the company intends to build Perfect Day Mexico on the adjacent piece of land at the port of Costa Maya allowing for other major cruise lines to continue to use the port.

In Royal Caribbean International’s October press release, the company said of Perfect Day Mexico, “…Perfect Day Mexico will be a hallmark of Royal Caribbean vacations that introduces new adventures in the western Caribbean. Vacationers have in store an unparalleled lineup of experiences and locally inspired twists across the design, flavors and spirit. With more to be revealed, highlights include an all-new, thrilling waterpark; jaw-dropping pools and beaches, restaurants, bars and more spots for all tastebuds; music and more.”

With its Perfect Day lineup and Beach Club experiences, Royal Caribbean is counting on the destinations to continue to bring passengers to its cruise line and revenue to its bottom line. The Beach Clubs are different from Perfect Day as they have an added-fee and limited capacity.

Michael Bayley, president and CEO, Royal Caribbean International said, “Destinations are a big part of why families and adventurers vacation with Royal Caribbean, and in collaboration with Mexico’s state of Quintana Roo, we are unlocking new and unparalleled ways to make memories in a destination known and loved for its natural beauty, warm culture and prime location.”

The port of Costa Maya is currently used by Carnival Cruise Line, Norwegian Cruise Line, Virgin Voyages, MSC Cruises, Princess Cruises and more on their Western Caribbean itineraries.
